Finally made it to Baku!
27th May 2019
Arrived in Tbilisi airport at 3am in the morning and the place was a bustling hive of activity. Got a stamp in my passport and a new country to add to the long list of countires I have been fortunate to visit.
In some ways the before scheduled arrival time and efficiency of immigration, baggage claim and customs just added to the 6+ hours we then had to wait before checking in for our third and final flight to Baku!
Tbilisi airport is clean and spacious but without many places to be able to rest in any sort of horizontal position....at least nowhere that did not involve lying down in an ornamental feature.
After a long wait and after a beautiful sunrise and watching the airport wake up, we finally got checked in and literally sprinted to lounge number 3 of the trip for much needed coffee and food!
There was some trepidation about the next flight on an airline we did not recognise before the trip and one with apparently only 8 planes in it's fleet. We should not have worried and it was reassuring to see a new looking plane at the gate against a stunning backdrop of Georgian countryside.
We boarded on time and left the stand exactly on schedule. Apart from one hilarious moment when my travel buddy grabbed the arm rest a bit too firmly after some bad turbulence shortly after take off, the flight was great with spectacular views of many snow covered peaks. Think Georgia is a country that needs to be explored by me in more detail in the future!
On the approach to Baku airport, we were treated to perfect views of the whole city...it looked much larger than I had been anticipating.
All the airport workers were smiling, albeit a few with bemused looks at tired looking football supporters willing to travel a long way just to watch grown men running after a ball for 90 mins (possibly 120 mins and penalties)! The whole airport (and as we discovered, much of the rest of Baku) was decked out with Europa League Final banners.
We had finally made it to Baku!!
